What is a Specialist Physiotherapist?
Specialisation is awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists. A Specialist Physiotherapist has undergone a rigorous and challenging examination process in order to achieve the highest level of physiotherapy expertise in Australia, leading to Fellowship of the Australian College of Physiotherapists.
Fellows of the College are actively engaged in their own professional development, evidence-based research and contribute to the professional development of their physiotherapy colleagues. They review complex musculoskeletal disorders providing comprehensive reports and second opinions to insurers and liaise with other members of the healthcare team including general practitioners, surgeons and other physiotherapists.
Review by a Specialist Physiotherapist involves taking a detailed history of your problem, an assessment and evaluation of multiple factors that may be linked to your problem and the development of a comprehensive management plan to help you move forward and return to your previous level of function. Review by a specialist physiotherapist is recommended prior to undergoing shoulder surgery or having repeated injections.
Dr Alison Thorpe is one of a small number of Specialist Sports Physiotherapists in Western Australia.
